Márton nap hagyományosan a 40 napos adventi böjtöt megelőző utolsó nap, ami a jóízű és gazdag falatozás jegyében telt. Az őszi betakarítási munkálatok végeztével ilyenkor vette kezdetét a téli pihenés időszaka. A hiedelem szerint aki Márton napján „libát nem eszik, az egész évben éhezik”, a lakomához pedig „Márton poharával”, az éppen kiforrott újborral koccintottak.
