Krúdy Gyula a magyar irodalom egyik legnagyobb lumpja és egyben az egyik leginkább szerethető alakja. A 190 centi magas, ábrándos tekintetű, szomorkás ábrázatú író falta a nőket, (lánya szerint 133 szeretője volt) megszállottan kártyázott, literszámra itta minden nap a nagyfröccsöket, a pesti éjszaka királya volt, aki soha nem akart hazatérni. És mindenekelőtt az egyik legnagyobb gourmand, amiről ráadásul rengeteg adoma is kering. Így tartja a legenda, a valóság azonban ennél jóval árnyaltabb, hiszen a közhiedelemben sajátosan összekeveredett az író magánélete és az általa megírt alakok története.
Krúdynak a vendéglők, kocsmák elsősorban az egyedüllét elviselésének kellékei voltak. Krúdy nem tudott főzni, sőt utolsó éveiben már enni sem nagyon. Számára nem az evés volt a fontos, hanem az evésről való beszéd.
